Spinal traction can be accomplished in a number of different ways. Let us walk through different methods of spinal traction including massage chairs. Traction or stretching requires a force. This can be a bending force or a pulling force. The purpose of traction is to stretch out the soft tissues between joint surfaces. When looking at spinal traction, the key is to exert a force which stretches the soft tissues.
The most common form of spinal traction used is a pulling force. Typically, the patient is laid on their back and their hips are held and a force is exerted on the shoulders and head. A spinal decompression machine is typically used to exert a pulling force on the patient spine by stretching the patient when they are supine.
A spinal decompression machine works on a theory of extending the disc in unison from top to bottom. The machine is exerting a force on both ends of the spine which pulls apart the cervical discs and stretches the soft tissues. This is also the more common thought of mechanical traction.
Inversion therapy is another method commonly used to provide traction of the spine. The basic idea behind inversion therapy is to suspend you upside down by your feet. You can either wear boots or lay flat on an in version bed. With the boots, one must lock them onto a bar which requires a little gymnastics.
Now with inversion therapy the force to elongate the soft tissues is a pulling force. By suspending the individual by their feet, the force of gravity and the weight of the patient are used to apply traction. Inversion boots only apply the full force using the combination of gravity and body weight.
Roller tables are commonly used to apply traction across the length of the spine. In this case, a patient is laid down on the table. The table is activated, and a roller passes up and down the length of the patient’s spine.
When using a roller table, a mechanical force is applied with the use of a roller. The roller causes a bending of the soft tissues. This occurs when the roller passes and causes the cervical disc to deflect. This deflection stretches and elongates the soft tissues.
When a massage chair applies traction to the spine, it is also passing a roller. The roller is activated to go up and down the individuals spine. As the roller moves across the spine it will deflect the cervical discs. This mechanical bending force is used to stretch the soft tissues.
Massage chairs can apply this type of mechanical traction to the spine. They are using gravity as the pulling force over the top of the roller. The roller causes the cervical disc to deflect when the roller passes. The soft tissues are then stretched which is the definition of mechanical traction.
Massage chairs are also able to provide a number of other treatments in addition to spinal traction. Massage chairs have a full array of massage treatments and programs. Additionally heating elements are placed throughout the chair soothing warmth can be applied as needed. Massage chairs also have stretching of the lower body. Massage chairs also come with MP3 players which can provide a relaxing environment for the patient.
A variety of different treatments are provided with a massage chair. Massage chairs have many different massage techniques. These massage techniques can be to target specific muscle groups. They can also be adjusted in intensity. Massage chairs provide consistent massage therapy to patients. Massage also provides patients with other treatments including lower body stretching, heating and music therapy.

Low back pain affects hundreds of thousands of people each year. Unfortunately, statistics point out that almost everyone, at some point in their lifetime, will experience low back pain. We may not be able to completely prevent all possible occurrences of it, there are many things we can do. We will look at some of the practical preventative tactics such as diet, posture, lifting and massage chair therapy which can help to minimize the possibility of low back pain or speed its recovery.
Diet is essential to maintaining the health of the soft tissues and bones of the spine. Many people with low back pain have very poor diets. Their diets may contain many processed foods and sugars and fast food high in fats. This can cause obesity which increases the load on the spine. Maintain a diet using fresh foods over processed foods.
One important area to look at is reducing the stress on your back in your daily activities. Simple activities like sitting and standing and lifting can directly affect your spines health. You must learn the correct ways of lifting, sitting and standing. If these activities are done incorrectly then they will put extra stress on the lower spine.
Sitting and standing also helps to reduce the risk of having upper back pain. Many people find that they sit with their shoulders slouched forward which places much more strain on the muscles of the upper back. This can be corrected by learning to hold your shoulders back and sit straight. This protects the spine.
Lifting objects is an important area to perform correctly. Injury can occur even with light objects. Most people incorrectly lift objects by bending over and using their back. This causes very small muscles to have to do the heavy lifting. The proper technique to lift objects is with your legs. To lift objects with your legs you must bend your knees. Bend your knees down until you can pick up the object and then straighten your legs back up while keeping your back straight.
You need to do periodic exercise to help strengthen your back. Light exercise should include a warm-up of stretching and massage therapy. With the muscles warmed up then do some light aerobics exercises. Going for a walk for just 20 minutes a day can help strengthen your back. You want to keep your back muscles strong and flexible.
Massage chair therapy is used extensively to restore flexibility in the lower back muscles. There are a variety of massage techniques that are used to stimulate the muscles of the lumbar area. Slight stretching of the soft tissue areas is important for them to maintain their elasticity. Massage chairs use techniques such as kneading, vibration, compression and tapping to soothe and relieve the sore muscle areas.
You should also examine how you sleep. Your sleeping position is very important. We typically spend anywhere between 6 to 8 hours sleeping per day. This is perhaps something we do more than anything else. It is better to sleep on your back than on your stomach. Some people find that putting a pillow between their knees helps to keep their spine straighter, if you sleep on your side. Sometimes the mattress does not support properly, but with the addition of a small rolled towel under your lower back can provide the support you need.
Prevention starts with the basics. Start with your diet, exercise, sitting and standing, lifting techniques, massage chair therapy and your sleeping position. Check with your medical professional for further information in these areas. Prevention of low back pain is an ongoing process. A massage chair can be an important partner to help you maintain your spine in the best health possible.
