What do all of the top models and most movie stars have in common? The answer is six pack abs. A defined midsection is considered the Holy Grail of fitness. If a person has defined abs, that person is usually considered to be in exceptional shape. I believe it has something to do with the fact that the abdominal area is the last place to lose body fat, so if a man is defined in that area he is probably in great shape overall.
These days if you go into any gym, you will see a large focus on “core exercises.” Personal trainers have people doing all sorts of crazy exercises on exercise balls which supposedly forces the body to stabilize itself using “core muscles.” The funny thing is that I see people do this week in and week out and none of these people get any closer to getting six pack abs.
Another school of thought is to work abs hard every day. There are tons of exercises which focus on the abdominal muscles…
1. Many people use various floor exercises such as crunches or sit-ups. People also use machines in their quest for six pack abs.
2. Some people recommend working the abs every day or every other day.
3. Some tell you to use high reps and no weight or heavy weight like every other muscle.
4. I see tons of people do this week in and week out and guess what…very few of those people have six pack abs!
I have a very defined midsection year round, but it wasn’t always that way. I followed the above recommendations and failed to get that six pack look. Believe it or not, a back injury helped me figure out what works best to get six pack abs! Let me elaborate…
I sustained a back injury 5 years ago and was unable to perform any crunch movement without pain.
I was bummed out, because I had a vacation to Cancun planned 8 months later. I wanted to look great in a swimsuit and have firm six pack abs. I had to give up on working my abs directly for 8 full months! I was convinced that my abs would look flabby. A crazy thing happened…I had amazing six pack abs in time for my vacation and I didn’t do one ab exercise for 8 months!
Okay, since that time I haven’t worked abs directly at all and my midsection looks better than ever. I am convinced that having six pack abs showing is 95% about your body fat percentage and maybe 5% or less about working the abs. You see, all of us already have a nice six pack…it is just hidden under a layer of fat. I guarantee that if you get your body fat to 10% or lower, you will have amazing six pack abs for the world to see. My recommendation is to drop your ab workout and spend that time on cardio. You want nice abs? Hit the Treadmill or the Elliptical Machine. Seriously, it the only way you will ever see those abs.

Ripped abs is a dream for many people. They try to get them by using a lot of exercises, many of them without success. Everybody seems to have an idea on how they can get those six pack beautifully shaped but not many people manage to actually do it. This is because in many cases the theory is good but the practice is not so good.
I have heard that many people to sit ups to get great abs but that is not at all recommended for abs. Some other people do cardio or crunches to get great abs. but this article will save you a lot of time because it will allow you to understand the best ways in which to achieve this.
Why crunches and sit-ups aren’t doing it for the abs.
Pretty much, they suck. Because sit ups and crunches do not focus on the abs. They work the psoas muscles.
Why sit-ups and crunches suck.
Why do they suck? Because neither exercise focuses 100% on the abs throughout the movement, especially the sit-ups. Most of the exercise hits the psoas muscles.
By doing these exercises you could actually make yourself look fatter. You will also get a sore neck and not the ripped abs you want. So you can quit this habit and do something else. This means you have to do deadlifts and squat.
These two exercises are great at developing your abs. They will work indirectly and this means it will allow you to stabilize the body. Using weighted resistance is one of the solutions. So do not worry about getting ripped abs because you will easily be able to do that. One of the things you should take care of is the diet. If your diet is not a proper one, they you ware clearly wasting your time. The most important thing is not to give up and try to work out a healthy diet and also do exercises. Body parts like arms, legs, and others can be sculpted and toned through workouts and leave the abdominal area with large fat deposit. But this is not the case in developing abdominal muscles. The abdomen cannot be developed without training the entire body. Abs workout means full-body workout.
Losing fat is important in achieving abs muscles. People with large bellies can have strong abdominals, but their muscles cannot be seen in their stomach. This is because the abs muscles are hidden underneath layers of fat. Research says that the body will only start to define its muscles after satisfying certain percentage of fat loss. Typical male should lose 10% of body fats while typical female should lose 14%. In defining abdominal muscles, fat loss must be paired with resistance training.
Conventional training for an abs program consists of the following:
Cardiovascular Routines
These are exercises that aim to develop body rates as well as strengthening the heart and lungs. It can also improve the pulse and breathing of a person, in addition to excellent fat loss program.
Upper Abs Exercises
It is mainly composed of basic crunches through balls and cables. This can be done in a standing position or while lying in the floor or in a bench.
Lower Abs Exercises
Develops lower abdominals by utilizing leg raises and lifts in addition to crunches.
Obliques Exercises
This can be characterized by abdominal twisting.
Optional routines include exercises for transverse abdominis and lower back. Conventional abs program are done in conjunction with proper diet.
Modern abs program is almost the same with the conventional, but training for the whole body was added. It is no longer limited to abdominal exercises but also in the back, chest, arms, and so on. The following are some exercises that can be included in the workout:
Walking
It is a simple cardiovascular exercise but can impose many benefits for the human body. It can be done in any place every day.
Swimming
This is a low-impact exercise that also serves as a full-body workout. It has loads of different strokes to train the shoulders, legs, arms, chest, and so on. Swimming also improves endurance and can be done even by pregnant women. Joints are less exposed to stress and pressure because workout is done in waters, making it safe and suitable to those who are recovering from joint problems.
Circuit
Circuit training is usually done in a fitness center. Instructors can design series of exercise to be executed for a specified frequency per week. Exercises usually have many repetitions with minimal rest between each set. Circuit program can be changed as the abdominal and body strength progresses, but there should be a transition period in-between to avoid over-exertion by the body.
High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT
Human body always adapts with the exercises and adjusts calorie consumption to conserve body fuel and energy. Studies show that maintaining the same program for a long period of time will cause the body to be immune and get used with the routines. HIIT aims to avoid this scenario by varying the pace at which the routine is done. A person can go slow to moderate for the first five minutes, have an intense workout for the succeeding minutes, lower the pace once exhausted, and slow down until the body has recovered and becomes relaxed again. HIIT is very useful in swimming, cycling, running, and the likes.
